Welcome to Octab, accessible from octab.app. Your privacy is critically important to us, and this privacy policy aims to clearly explain how we collect, use, and safeguard the information you provide to us through our Chrome Extension and website.

1. Introduction​

This policy is designed to help you understand what information we collect, why we collect it, and how you can manage your information. We believe in transparency and are committed to being upfront about our privacy practices, including how we treat your personal information.

2. Information We Collect​

2.1 Registration Information​

When you register for an account with Octab, we require your email address and a password. This information is necessary to create your account, to provide you with access to our services, and to communicate with you.

2.2 Your Folders and Saved Tabs​

The folders you make and the tabs you save in them are stored on our servers, so they are there on every computer you sign in on. This includes the address and title of each saved tab, the names and colors of its tab groups, folder names, and the notes you leave on folders. Your settings, and anything else you add to Octab (such as notes, tasks and whiteboards in the classic Octab), are stored the same way.

2.3 Device and Log Information​

We collect specific information about your device when you access our services, including your internet protocol (IP) address and user agent (which includes device type, web browser, and operating system). This information helps us to diagnose problems, manage security, and understand where our logins are coming from.

If something goes wrong in Octab, it sends us an error report: the error message and where in Octab's code it happened, the Octab page you were on, your browser's user agent and language, and your account ID. We use these reports only to find and fix problems.

2.4 Payment Information​

Although we do not collect financial information directly, we utilize Stripe, a third-party payment processor, to manage and process subscriptions. Please note that Stripe operates independently from us, and it has its own privacy policy which we encourage you to review.

2.5 Information That Stays on Your Computer​

Some features keep their information only in your browser and never send it to us:

  • The Journal, which lists the tabs you close (their addresses and titles) for 90 days. Tabs in Incognito windows are never recorded. You can turn the Journal off or clear it at any time in Settings.
  • The marks that show which of your saved websites are already open in a tab.
  • When you last opened each saved website, which Review uses to show the ones you haven't opened in a while.
  • How long each open tab has been left alone, if you choose to have idle tabs close into the Journal.

2.6 Analytics​

The Octab extension does not use analytics or tracking tools. Our website, octab.app, uses Google Analytics, with IP addresses anonymized, to count visits and see which pages are read. Google's privacy policy applies to that information.

3. How We Use Your Information​

The information we collect from you is used to:

  • Provide, maintain, and improve our services
  • Process your subscriptions and payments through Stripe
  • Find and fix errors in Octab
  • Communicate with you, including sending service-related notifications
  • Ensure the security of our services and detect any fraudulent or unauthorized activity

We do not sell your information, and we do not use it for advertising.

4. Sharing Your Information​

We do not share your personal information with third parties, except as necessary to provide our services or as required by law. This includes sharing information with:

  • Service providers that we use to support our business, such as Stripe for payments and the cloud providers that host our servers. These providers are authorized to use your personal information only as necessary to provide these services to us.
  • Law enforcement, government officials, or other third parties when we are compelled to do so by a subpoena, court order, or similar legal procedure, or when we believe in good faith that the disclosure of personal information is necessary to prevent physical harm or financial loss, to report suspected illegal activity, or to investigate violations of our terms and conditions.

5. Your Rights and Choices​

You have certain rights regarding the personal information we hold about you. These include the rights to:

  • Access or request a copy of the information we hold about you
  • Request that we correct or update any information you believe is inaccurate
  • Request that we delete your personal information from our systems, subject to necessary exceptions, such as compliance with legal obligations
  • Opt-out of marketing communications or other specific types of communication

6. Data Security​

We take reasonable measures to protect your information from unauthorized access, theft, or loss. While we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.
